OTTAWA — Athletics Canada announced Thursday that the Township of Langley, B.C., will host 2022 and 2023 Canadian track and field championships.

The move comes after the 2020 Olympic trials in Montreal were pushed back a year until June 2021. The trials were originally scheduled to take place in June but were postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were also postponed for a year due to the novel coronavirus.

The Township of Langley had initially been awarded the 2021 and 2022 Canadian championships.

The 2022 and 2023 Canadian championships will serve as the trials for the next two scheduled world track and field championships. The 2022 world championships will be held July 15-24 in Portland, Ore., and the 2023 event is scheduled for Aug. 19-27 in Budapest, Hungary.

The last time the Canadian track and field championships were held in British-Columbia was in Victoria in 2004.
