Rebels 7 Bisons 4

The U15 AAA Red Deer Rebels began their season with a bang Saturday afternoon at Servus Arena with a 7-4 win over the Calgary Bisons.

Head coach Justin Jarmolicz said he liked the level of competition from his team, who fired 35 shots on net in the win.

“It’s early in the year obviously there’s some stuff to work on but their compete level got them the win today,” he said.

After a slow start, the Rebels captain Easton Daneault scored two goals to get the home team on the board in the first period.

In the middle frame, the Rebels added one more to take a 3-0 lead scored by Tayte Hoiland. The Bisons then answered with a pair of goals to come within one. Kohen Lodge fired one into the back of the net for Red Deer to take a 4-2 lead heading into the final frame.

In the third period, Calgary opened up the scoring to pull themselves within a goal once again but Red Deer responded with three straight goals by Lodge, Hoiland, and Crew Martinson. Calgary scored one more goal but the Rebels held on for the big win.

Rebels goaltender Ryder Cyrenne had a great performance in the net making 31 saves.

“The boys were ready to rock and roll and they’re coming together as a group because they’re from all over. We got kids from Rocky Mountain House, Red Deer, Stettler, Lacombe, and everywhere,” he said.

Returning this year for the Rebels are Daneault, Dermot Johnston, and Dallin Antos are the only returning players with the rest being fresh faces to the team.

On Saturday Dallin Antos finished with two assists, while the Rebels saw contributions from multiple players in the lineup including Lodge, Daneault, and Hoiland all had two goals each.

“We were pleasantly surprised. They’ve been working hard in practice and all the boys were contributing today so it was great,” he added.

Jarmolicz’s expectations for the team he said are always high and this season they expect to win.

“We have a program that had a pretty good draw zone so we want to compete all the time and be there at the end,” he said.

Sunday in Calgary, the Rebels picked up a 4-2 win over the Northwest Calgary Flames. Bennet Roth, Brock England, Barrett Newfield and Easton Daneault added tallies for Red Deer. Carson Tourand made 35 saves in the victory.
