Omon Edobar was as clutch as they come for the RDC Kings Saturday night.
The first-year guard from Calgary nailed a massive three-pointer with just 30 seconds left in the game and it ultimately propelled RDC to an 83-82 win over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
Edobar was named player of the game for RDC with 23 points, but more importantly, he was a leader for the Kings in the victory according to his head coach.
“Kid plays tough. He’s out there all minutes and he’s guarding one of the best guards in the league. He’s showing great energy. Then having the poise to nail that big shot at the end which pretty much sealed it,” said Kings head coach Clayton Pottinger.
It looked like the Kings were going to cruise to victory after taking a 47-33 lead into halftime, but the Rattlers stormed back with a 25-point third quarter that cut the deficit to seven.
RDC was able to weather the storm by heading to the foul line 12 times in the third quarter as well as down the stretch and they came through when called upon at the line.
“Another tough one. They’re a very tough basketball team… our plan B worked against their studs today,” Pottinger said.
“They picked up three quick (fouls) in the third so we knew there was potential to get to the bonus early so we started making that a bit of a focus.”
Forward Daniel Powell piled up another double-double for RDC with 26 points and 14 rebounds in 38 minutes of action.
First-year guard from Malton, Ont., Dshawn Tyrell poured in 18 points and added nine boards. Off the bench freshman big man Braiden Ousey played 19 minutes and pitched in eight points and seven rebounds.
RDC now sits third in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference South Division with 18 points and will host the SAIT Trojans next Friday at 8 p.m.
