Day 1 proved to be the perfect conditions for scoring at the PGA of Alberta Championship.

Calgary’s Wes Heffernan was on fire in the opening round of the two-day tournament at River Bend Golf and Recreation Area and is out front of the 90-player field.

Heffernan shot a brilliant nine-under-par 63 and leads the field by three strokes. Dallas Cantera, David MacComb, Jeff Cuthbertson and Eric Locke are all tied for second at six-under.

Heffernan’s 63 including birdies on the final four holes and broke the previous course record of 65 at River Bend.

The tournament concludes on Tuesday.
