Wranglers, Vipers in tough at provincials

The Blackfalds Wranglers and the Red Deer Vipers will both be challenged to advance onto the playoff portion of the Junior B provincials.

PEACE RIVER — The Blackfalds Wranglers and the Red Deer Vipers will both be challenged to advance onto the playoff portion of the Junior B provincials.

Blackfalds tied the Beaumont Chiefs 3-3 and the Vipers lost to the defending provincial champion Lloydminster Bandits 5-2 on Thursday. Both teams sit with 0-1-1 records and in last place in their respective pools.

For Red Deer to advance they are going to have to beat the Edmonton Warriors by more than three goals today and hope the Bandits beat the host North Peace Navigators.

Meanwhile the Wranglers need to beat the Calgary Royals today and hope the Chiefs down the Whitecourt Wolverines who lost for just the second time all season on Thursday — 4-3 to the Royals.

In Red Deer’s loss they were done in by a five-goal second period by the Bandits.

Drew Todd and Justin Moir did score for the Vipers while Jason Pohl made 41 saves in the loss.

Meanwhile Karson French, David Jantzie and Jared Williams scored for the Wranglers in their tie with Beaumont, while being backstopped by Layne Swier.
