1 man rescued, 1 man presumed drowned on Elbow River

CALGARY — The search for the body of a man in Calgary’s Elbow River has been called off.

CALGARY — The search for the body of a man in Calgary’s Elbow River has been called off.

The Calgary Fire Department got reports about 5 p.m. Monday that two adult males were in distress in the river near the Talisman Centre.

Rescuers spotted one man in the area about 40 metres downstream.

He was resuscitated and taken to hospital, where he was in stable but critical condition Monday night.

Rescuers continued looking for the second person, but called off the search when darkness fell.

Fire department spokesman Brian McAsey says the search will likely resume Tuesday morning, but it is now a recovery operation, not a rescue.

There has been a ban on people being in or near the Bow and Elbow rivers due to high levels and strong currents.
