FORT MCMURRAY — RCMP are drawing attention to the number of people who speed on highways and roads in northeastern Alberta.

Police say they issued 561 speeding tickets last month on Highway 63 and other roads in the Wood Buffalo RCMP district.

Const. Christina Wilkins says that number is higher than usual.

In one case they nabbed a motorist who was driving more than 184 km/h in a 100-kilometre zone Saturday on Highway 63 — a day after seven people died in a fiery crash.

Police are not linking speeding with the fatal accident, which is under investigation.

The deaths have sparked renewed calls for the province to make good on a promise to finish twinning the stretch of the highway from Edmonton to Fort McMurray.
