65 guinea pigs purposely poisoned at Edmonton zoo

Edmonton’s Valley Zoo is dealing with the deaths of about 65 guinea pigs.

EDMONTON — Edmonton’s Valley Zoo is dealing with the deaths of about 65 guinea pigs.

City spokeswoman Mary Lou Reeleder says someone broke into the zoo after hours and purposely poisoned the animals.

She says zoo staff found the dead guinea pigs in their exhibit Wednesday morning, along with some articles that shouldn’t have been there.

The zoo is reviewing its security.

The guinea pig exhibit is outdoors and allows the animals to run free in a large enclosure.

Reeleder says everybody at the zoo is very upset.
