“240 Gordie” Bonin sits inside an A-Fuel dragster at the Red Deer Cruise Night at the Parkland Mall parking lot on Thursday. The car was built by Harold Fjallman and many others to model the original car Bonin drove from 1970 to 1972, before he started driving nitro funny cars full time. The car was brought to the show to honour Bonin and his return to Red Deer. In 1972, Bonin began racing funny cars, stretched fibreglass-body street cars engineered for force and speed, and became known as “240 Gordie” for his regular speeds of 240 mph (386 km/h) on the track. Bonin, who was inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 2000, said he was happy to be back in Red Deer again.
