The Red Deer Carstar Braves exploded for eight runs in the second inning and rolled to an 11-6 victory over the Fort McMurray Giants in NorWest Midget AAA Baseball League play at Great Chief Park Saturday afternoon.

The Braves led 9-1 after two innings, but the Giants got to starting pitcher Jonah Penner for three runs in the third inning to make things more interesting.

The Braves seemed to let down a bit after the big inning, although head coach Pat Penner didn’t want to focus on that.

“I thought overall we hit the ball better and there were some good signs,” he said after watching his squad even their season record at 3-3.

“We still need to work some on our focus and continue to work hard, but we have talented kids and it’s showing more and more.”

Corbyn Shields replaced Penner with two away in the third inning and worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run on no hits, six walks and six strikeouts.

“Corbyn threw well, although he his control wasn’t the best,” said Penner. “But it’s only his second time (pitching) this season. It will come.”

Penner was also pleased with what he saw from Brandon Bodemer, who tossed a one-two-three seventh inning.

Brady Porter led the Braves with three hits and a walk while Jason Garrett had a single, double and a sacrifice fly and Reign Letkeman had a pair of singles. Nathan Domaini had a double.

The Braves host the Giants in a twin bill today at 9 a.m. and noon at Great Chief Park.
