Aces win third straight handball title

The Bentley Aces captured the provincial high school tier II girls’ team handball championship for the third year in a row during the weekend.

CALGARY — The Bentley Aces captured the provincial high school tier II girls’ team handball championship for the third year in a row during the weekend.

The Aces beat Mayerthorpe 15-6 in the final after beating Bearspaw Academy of Calgary 17-7 in the semifinals. Earlier they downed Clear Water Academy of Calgary 7-5 and Bonnyville 18-5.

In tier I action the Lindsay Thurber Raiders finished fourth on the girls’ side and lost in the consolation final in the boys’ division.

The LTCHS girls lost 17-14 to Edmonton Eastglen and beat Salisbury of Sherwood Park 16-12 in their pool. They dropped a 19-9 decision to Edmonton’s Harry Ainlay in the semifinal and lost 22-11 to Edmonton Eastglen in the third-place game.

Bev Facey of Sherwood Park won the girls’ title with a 12-11 overtime win over Ainlay.

The LTCHS boys lost 21-16 to Ross Sheppard of Edmonton and 25-16 to Salisbury in their pool before dropping a 25-14 decision to St. Thomas in the consolation final.

J. Percy Page of Edmonton downed Salisbury 22-20 in the final.
