EDMONTON — The Alberta government has approved an initial $50 million to help people get back on their feet after a devastating forest fire in Slave Lake.

EDMONTON — The Alberta government has approved an initial $50 million to help people get back on their feet after a devastating forest fire in Slave Lake.

Premier Ed Stelmach says the money is for the immediate needs of residents who were driven from their homes when the fire hit the town of 7,000.

Housing and income support are at the top of the list.

Government officials are at evacuation centres to help people assess their needs.

Stelmach says the money will start flowing by the end of the week.
