Witness helps nab suspect after fatality

Calgary man Walter Romaniuk saw the driver flee from a stolen truck involved in a fatal crash, and decided he wasn’t get to let the suspect get away.

Romaniuk was waiting in his car when he saw a pickup truck broadside the car in front of them, before smashing into a second vehicle. Three people from the first car hit were rushed to hospital, however a woman — believed to be in her 40s — later died.

Romaniuk says he saw one of the people from the truck flee into a nearby yard.

He waited until the man came out, and notified police. Two people have been taken into custody.

Icy roads lead to fatal crash

Icy roads appear to be behind a deadly crash near Pigeon Lake, south of Edmonton.

A Chevy Cavalier was trying to take a corner on a highway when it spun into the path of a Ford Crown Victoria. The driver of the Cavalier was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither person in the Crown Victoria was seriously hurt. No names have been released.

Woman declared dead after fire

CALGARY — A Calgary woman has died in a fire that investigators believed she herself set.

When fire crews arrived at the fire scene earlier, neighbours told them they believed a person was inside the burning duplex.

Firefighters found the woman unconscious on the second floor and took her to hospital.

She was the only person home at the time, and no one else was hurt.

Investigators say the fire had more than one ignition source.
