Alberta church vandalized

CALMAR — Parishioners are calling it a test of their faith after their Edmonton-area church was vandalized a week before Easter.

CALMAR — Parishioners are calling it a test of their faith after their Edmonton-area church was vandalized a week before Easter.

As much as $20,000 damage was discovered last weekend when the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Calmar, southwest of the city, was being readied for the Palm Sunday service.

Crosses were bent, pages were ripped from worship books and several other items in the church were broken.

Barb Iwanicka (eye-WAHN’-ih-kah), a church spokeswoman, says Holy Trinity has insurance but not enough to cover all the damage.

Iwanicka says parishioners will have to pull together to repair and replace what they can.

She says it’s possible church members may forgive whoever was responsible for the vandalism, but they will not forget what was done.
