Alberta court cuts jail time for man who hit toddler in drive-by shooting

A man who hit a toddler in a drive-by shooting on a central Alberta reserve will be spending less time in jail.

EDMONTON — A man who hit a toddler in a drive-by shooting on a central Alberta reserve will be spending less time in jail.

The Alberta Court of Appeal has reduced Christopher Crane’s sentence for aggravated assault and other unrelated charges to seven years from nine.

The court ruled the original trial judge made a mistake in calculating the global sentence for four separate convictions.

Asia Saddleback was hit when she was 23 months old and spending time at her grandfather’s house on the Samson Cree reserve in April 2008.

The bullet is permanently lodged between her liver and spine.

Crane told a sentencing hearing last year that he was drinking and doing drugs when he fired a rifle shot into a house he thought belonged to a rival gang member.
