Alberta goes digital for emergency or disaster warnings

Alberta is turning to digital technology to warn people of an emergency or disaster.

CALGARY — Alberta is turning to digital technology to warn people of an emergency or disaster.

The new alert system includes a dedicated website and the use of social media such as Facebook or Twitter.

Critical alerts will still be broadcast on radio and television if life-threatening danger such as a tornado is imminent.

Municipal Affairs Minister Hector Goudreau (GOO’-droh) says communities will be able to use enhanced alerts as part of local emergency preparedness.
