EDMONTON — Alberta wants ideas on how to get more people to lead healthier lifestyles by participating in community recreation and sports programs.

But the province is asking the question after it cut $1.8 million from its budget.

The government is giving municipalities and community organizations 60 days to comment on Active Alberta.

The province says research suggests sedentary lifestyles are rising and result in more obesity and preventable chronic diseases.

Gary Shelton of the Edmonton Sport Council says the draft plan is promising, but won’t achieve much unless it is backed up with money for new facilities and to fix up existing ones.

Shelton says the province should also come up with money to make school recreation facilities available to the public after hours.
