Alberta Health Services apologizes to cancer patient over staff shortage

Alberta Health Services has apologized to an Edmonton woman for the fact that she likely won’t receive chemotherapy for her illness.

EDMONTON — Alberta Health Services has apologized to an Edmonton woman for the fact that she likely won’t receive chemotherapy for her illness.

The problem is a staff shortage at the Cross Cancer Institute that has resulted in only priority patients getting such treatment.

Ann Reynar, who suffers from stage four colon cancer, says she appreciates the apology.

But her husband, Wave Reynar, says it took the provincial agency five weeks to tell them she wouldn’t get treatment.

Alberta Liberal Hugh MacDonald says the situation should not be tolerated and called for better management of cancer treatment services.

Dr. Tony Field with Alberta Health Services say the situation could get worse as five out of 20 oncologists in the province are expected to retire soon.
