RED DEER — Alberta is making it easier for police to issue Amber Alerts.
In the past, police had to confirm that a child or an adult with a proven mental or physical disability was abducted before issuing the public appeal for information.
Now police can issue an Amber Alert if they have a reasonable belief there has been an abduction.
Eilish Murphy, a spokeswoman for Alberta’s Solicitor General Department, says the change went into effect Dec. 1.
Murphy says the change could make the difference between life or death for a child or a person with a mental or physical disability.
During Ambert Alerts media outlets broadcast and post information about a possible abduction to get the public to provide information to help police find the missing person.
