Alberta MLA at centre of ethics probe a no-show

EDMONTON — An MLA who left Premier Alison Redford’s Progressive Conservative caucus over an ethics investigation is a no-show so far in the fall sitting of the legislature.

EDMONTON — An MLA who left Premier Alison Redford’s Progressive Conservative caucus over an ethics investigation is a no-show so far in the fall sitting of the legislature.

Peter Sandhu, who represents Edmonton-Manning, has been absent for the first two days and couldn’t be reached for comment.

Earlier this month, he was cleared of alleged conflict of interest concerning his home-building company.

Ethics commissioner Neil Wilkinson ruled that Sandhu lobbied for legislative changes that would have helped his company.

But the commissioner decided Sandhu didn’t do anything wrong because other home builders would have benefited as well.

Wilkinson also found that Sandhu breached ethics rules when he failed to tell the legislature about six outstanding liens against him.

But the ethics commissioner suggested Sandhu acted on poor advice from his lawyer and shouldn’t be punished.

Sandhu now sits as an Independent and has yet to ask Redford’s caucus for reinstatement.
