LETHBRIDGE — A 22-year-old woman is facing criminal charges after police found three young children — one as young as two months old — alone in a southern Alberta home.

Police in Lethbridge say they got a call about 2:45 a.m. Thursday to check on the children’s welfare.

When they got to the home, they found it was unlocked and inside there were two girls, aged two months and 20 months, and a boy, 3, but no adults.

Police say they tried repeatedly to contact the adult occupants of the home to no avail, and that’s when the entered the home.

A woman who returned to the home about 4:30 a.m. was arrested.

She is scheduled to appear in court on June 28 on three counts of child abandonment and one count of wilfully causing a child to be in need of intervention.

It’s not known how long the children may have been left alone prior to police finding them.
