Alberta Mountie charged with assaulting man in custody

An investigation into the actions of a northern Alberta RCMP officer has led to charges against him.

EDMONTON — An investigation into the actions of a northern Alberta RCMP officer has led to charges against him.

The director of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says Const. Desmond Sandboe is accused of assault causing bodily harm and obstruction of justice.

The response team was called in to investigate after a man was injured in the cell area at the Lac La Biche detachment in September.

Director Clifton Purvis says he reviewed the team’s report and determined charges against the officer were warranted.

Sandboe has been with the Mounties for eight years.

He has been released on a promise to appear in Lac La Biche court Jan. 25 and must not contact the complainant.
