Alberta premier tours flood-ravaged areas

MEDICINE HAT — Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach toured the southeastern part of the province on the weekend and is promising that provincial money will quickly flow to residents with flooded basements and ruined homes.

Several areas of southern Alberta, including Medicine Hat, were ravaged by recent flooding, which has caused extensive damage.

After touring hard-hit areas on Sunday, Stelmach said getting money into the hands of those who need it is a priority.

He says there have been over 1,100 applications for provincial disaster assistance.

The provincial government announced last week that it would spend $200 million to help victims of severe flooding.

Stelmach has also apologized for the province’s slow response to the disaster, saying they’ve got to work harder in such cases to give the public they’ll get the help they need.
