DIDSBURY — RCMP have arrested a man in central Alberta after shots were fired at Mounties and two police cruisers were rammed.

Police say officers responded to a report of a distraught man armed with a rifle early this morning west of Didsbury.

When the Mounties arrived the man sped off in a pickup, ramming two cruisers.

Police say the man then fired several shots at officers.

Mounties say instead of returning fire officers surrounded the man until tactical squads arrived from Red Deer and Edmonton, when he surrendered.

The 31-year-old man has been sent to hospital for a medical assessment and has not been charged.
