SPRUCE GROVE, Alta. — RCMP are knocking on the doors of neighbours and searching for clues in the violent death of a school teacher in her Edmonton-area rural home.

Const. Barbara Roy said officers responded to a 911 call Thursday about a woman injured in her home northeast of Spruce Grove near the Edmonton Springs Golf Resort.

She was declared dead when police and paramedics arrived.

Roy described the woman’s death as suspicious and violent.

“We’re following any and all leads that we are coming across to attempt to find out what happened,” Roy said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday. The woman’s name was not released.

She lived in the home with her husband and two children.

She also taught at a middle school in the Parkland School Division, confirmed deputy superintendent Kelly Wilkins.

Students at the school were told about her death before classes Friday morning, Wilkins said. A crisis team, including grief counsellors, was on site to help staff and students.

“There was a real sense of calmness and peace within the school but lots of emotion and certainly people being supported,” said Wilkins. “(Students) are being very respectful of the fact that we do not have details and there is an investigation going on.”
