Alberta to cancel swine flu vaccine program next week

EDMONTON — With less likelihood of a new wave of swine flu this spring Alberta says it plans to end its vaccination program next week.

EDMONTON — With less likelihood of a new wave of swine flu this spring Alberta says it plans to end its vaccination program next week.

Marcia Johnson, medical officer of health for Alberta Health Services, says there isn’t much chance of a third wave of H1N1.

Alberta’s handling of the swine flu program late last year was criticized for long lines and a vaccine shortage. Only 1/3 of Albertans had the shot.

Health Minister Gene Zwozdesky says he has called for a review of Alberta’s swine flu response plan.

“I asked the Health Quality Council if they would look into the issues of preparedness and response to the H1N1 epidemic,” Zwozdesky said Monday.

Alberta Health Services CEO Stephen Duckett says he welcomes the review, adding that one can always learn from experience.
