Alberta to hire pathologists

EDMONTON — Alberta Justice wants to hire forensic pathologists in Calgary to replace one who has quit and two others who say they’re leaving.

EDMONTON — Alberta Justice wants to hire forensic pathologists in Calgary to replace one who has quit and two others who say they’re leaving.

The province currently has six medical experts who help the justice system investigate crimes and other deaths by performing autopsies.

Four work in Edmonton and two in Calgary — a third position in Calgary is vacant after a pathologist quit in January.

The other two Calgary doctors have served notice they will leave their jobs by this fall because of heavy workload.

Alberta Justice spokeswoman Julie Siddons (SIDD’-ens) says the province hopes to eventually have 10 pathologists.

Siddons says the government is working to ensure the shortage doesn’t affect the number of cases the Justice Department investigates.
