Alberta to update building code to make new homes energy efficient

The Consumers Council of Canada says Alberta is looking at changing its building code to require that new homes be made more energy efficient.

EDMONTON — The Consumers Council of Canada says Alberta is looking at changing its building code to require that new homes be made more energy efficient.

Council president Don Mercer says the province is working toward adopting the same updated building code now being used in Ontario and British Columbia.

Mercer says the biggest change would require a higher insulation standard for new homes.

He says such changes would reduce energy consumption and save consumers money.

The council and other groups have released a survey that suggests the vast majority of Albertans support stronger energy efficiency standards for new homes.

Alberta Municipal Affairs Department officials were not immediately available for comment.
