TORONTO — The 2012 CFL all-star team features an all-Canadian one-two punch at running back.
Jon Cornish of the Calgary Stampeders and Andrew Harris of the B.C. Lions have been voted on to the team, which is selected by votes from fans, journalists and CFL head coaches.
Cornish, from New Westminster, B.C., had a breakout season in 2012, winning the league’s outstanding Canadian award and finishing runner-up behind Toronto receiver Chad Owens as outstanding player. He ran for 1,457 yards, breaking the 56-year-old record for rushing yards by a Canadian set by Normie Kwong.
Harris, from Winnipeg, ran for 1,112 yards. It was the first time since 1956 that two Canadian running backs broke the 1,000-yard plateau.
Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo was named to his fifth all-star team after another strong season. He broke the 5,000-yard passing plateau for the second straight year and threw 31 touchdowns compared to 14 interceptions.
“This year he played with an injured sholder from Week 3, we never had our full receiving corps all year, we were down to our third-string running back, we had injuries on the ofensive line and he still put up 5,000 passing yards. To put up those numbers, he’s very deserving,” Alouettes GM Jim Popp said.
Owens joined fellow receivers Weston Dressler of Saskatchewan, Nik Lewis of Calgary and Fred Stamps of Edmonton.
Montreal guard Scott Flory earned his eighth all-star selection, while teammate Josh Bourke, earlier named the league’s top lineman, earned his second selection.
Edmonton linebacker J.C. Sherritt, the league’s top defensive player, and Hamilton returner Chris Williams, the top special-teams player, were also named all-stars.
