EDMONTON — Mounties in central Alberta have laid charges in a horrific car crash that killed two women earlier this year.

Charlotte Verkerk, 28, faces multiple counts, including impaired driving causing death, in the April 3 crash near Daysland.

Shelly Patterson, 47, died when a GMC Safari van crossed the highway centre line just after midnight and slammed head-on into her Ford Escape.

Erin Huggan, a 29-year-old riding in the Safari with the accused, was airlifted to hospital but later died from her injuries.

Five people were hurt or died in the crash.

Verkerk will appear in court in Killam on Sept. 7.
