Assessment ordered for man charged in Ponoka kidnapping

A psychiatric assessment was ordered on Friday for a man charged with kidnapping a prominent Ponoka businessman at gunpoint.

PONOKA — A psychiatric assessment was ordered on Friday for a man charged with kidnapping a prominent Ponoka businessman at gunpoint.

Larry Hugh McClelland, 49, who was remanded in custody, was ordered to return to Ponoka provincial court on Nov. 25.

He is expected to make a plea and election at his next court appearance.

McClelland also faces charges of unlawful confinement, using a firearm in the commission of an indictable offence, possession of a restricted firearm, extortion, pointing a firearm, and uttering threats.

The charges came after Ponoka auctioneer Blair Vold, 56, was abducted at gunpoint from his Morningside area property on Sept. 15.
