Attempted murder charge laid after wild police chase

An 18-year-old man and a male youth are accused of attempting to kill an RCMP officer during a wild pursuit in northeastern Alberta.

COLD LAKE — An 18-year-old man and a male youth are accused of attempting to kill an RCMP officer during a wild pursuit in northeastern Alberta.

Mounties say a pickup truck stolen from a location east of Bonnyville early Sunday morning was used to smash the front window of a liquor store in Cold Lake before fleeing.

Officers tracked the vehicle down but police say it backed into one of their cars, swerved at others and even turned around to take a run at pursuing cruisers.

The chase was called off but the driver then attempted to hit police cars parked on a roadside after the truck unexpectedly returned to the scene where a spike belt left its tires in shreds.

An officer approaching the truck on foot had to dive out of the way when the driver allegedly took a run at him and sideswiped another police car before coming to a rest in a ditch.
