EDMONTON — A man who was riding his all-terrain vehicle on unfamiliar ground is dead after he plunged over a 30-metre cliff at a gravel pit in Edmonton.

Police say the man, believed to be in his 30s, was operating his ATV Wednesday night when he was killed at the posted off-limits site in the city’s northeast.

They say the victim was wearing a helmet and other protective equipment but didn’t see the edge of the cliff.

He died at the scene.

Investigators say he was on his first trip to the gravel pit and was with a friend who was also riding an ATV.

The man’s name has not been released and alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the accident.
