About 40,000 people protested outside the government offices against the planned cut of state sector salaries by 25 percent and pensions by 15 percent threatening to call a general strike if the cuts went ahead. The cuts are meant to enable Romania meet an IMF (International Monetary Fund) set budget deficit target.
