Avalanche will retire Sakic’s number on opening night of NHL season

The league’s schedule, released Wednesday, also has four clubs starting the season in Europe and the Boston Bruins playing the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park in the 2010 Winter Classic.

The Colorado Avalanche will retire Sakic’s number prior to their game against the San Jose Sharks.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will raise their 2009 Stanley Cup banner at the Mellon Arena Oct. 2 before playing the New York Rangers.

All 30 NHL teams will be in action with a full stale of games on Oct. 3.
