EDMONTON — There’s finally been an arrest in the brutal beating death 22 years ago of a 83-year-old Edmonton woman who lived alone.

Police say they have charged 41-year-old Charles William Abou of British Columbia with second-degree murder.

Lillian Berube was repeatedly punched and viciously kicked into unconsciousness in her kitchen by an intruder who fled with cash and jewelry on Aug. 27, 1987.

She was found the next morning by a concerned neighbour and taken to hospital, where she died six days later from severe injuries.

Extensive investigations, including DNA tests, were done over the years, and police say detectives got a break when further forensics testing was conducted.
