EDMONTON — A convicted pedophile accused of violating a court order that bans him from public places where there are children has been released on bail.

Karl Toft, who has been living in an Edmonton half-way house, was arrested Friday after someone told police the man had allegedly been seen in a fast-food restaurant.

The 73-year-old has been ordered to stay away from any place where children may be and to report to police more frequently.

Toft was convicted of assaulting 18 boys between the mid-1960s and 1980s while he worked as a guard at a New Brunswick training centre.

He has since admitted to assaulting 200 boys over a 35-year period.

Toft is to return to court May 25.
