Balcony jump at Edmonton hotel lands young athlete in hospital

EDMONTON — A teenage basketball player from the Yukon is in stable but critical condition after falling from a hotel balcony just prior to a tournament in Edmonton.

Brendan Matheson of Whitehorse, who is 15, is a member of a team that had travelled to the Alberta capital for a tournament called the Great Canadian Shootout.

The team had just finished checking into a Radisson Hotel on the city’s south side last Thursday afternoon when security was called about someone plunging from a fourth-floor balcony.

Hotel general manager Robin Cumine says it appears the youth was trying to jump from one room to another when he fell.

Cumine says the teen was in distress when he was found and was trying to get himself up.

Matheson’s parents have flown to Edmonton to be with their son and a vigil for the boy was held Monday morning at the Whitehorse United Church.
