Todd Nivens, the Kerry Wood Nature Centre’s programs co-ordinator, adds to the thousands of used batteries Friday the centre collected through a city-sponsored school competition.
Maryview School, which collected about one kg per student for a total of 205 kgs, won the use of a planetarium for a week. Second place went to Oriole Park Elementary, which collected 680 grams per student for a total of 302 kgs.
Third place went to Gandview Elementary which collected 607 grams per student. Those schools each receive a decorated rain barrel.
The total weight of batteries collected was a whopping 1,224 kgs from the 15 participating schools.
