A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 20 for a Rumsey man charged with discharging bear spray against people in a Stettler home.

The date was set in Stettler provincial court on Thursday for Lyle Gordon Hampton, 38, who faces 11 charges in connection with the incident on March 18.

A preliminary is held to determine if there’s enough evidence to warrant an accused be tried in Court of Queen’s Bench.

Stettler RCMP received a complaint about 5:40 p.m. that a man had sprayed the chemical at occupants in a house in the 5900 block of 52nd Avenue. The suspect then turned himself into police.

Hampton is charged with three counts of assault with a weapon, three counts of uttering threats to cause bodily harm, mischief to property, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, break and enter, unlawfully being in a dwelling house and criminal harassment.
