CALGARY — Police are pointing to a crackdown on gang activity as the key reason for a substantial drop in Calgary’s murder rate this year.

There have been 14 homicides so far in Alberta’s biggest city — the lowest rate since 2002 and 2003.

There were 26 murders in 2009 and a record 34 the previous year.

Staff Sgt. Rick Tuza, a police spokesman, says he thinks this year’s low homicide rate is an anomaly and would be surprised if it stays this low.

John Dooks, president of the Calgary Police Association, says gangs are innovative and it’s important not to cut police budgets.
