Big heist under the big top, thieves make off with Cirque masks and necklace

VANCOUVER — If a bejewelled gorilla is spotted wandering through Metro Vancouver, police want to know about it, because they’re pretty sure it has no intention of joining the circus.

Police suspect the accessorized ape is little more than a clown with criminal intent, wanted for a recent robbery.

Vancouver Police Sgt. Randy Fincham says three men broke into a Cirque Du Soleil tent near downtown Vancouver early Saturday morning, escaping with a jewelled necklace, a black mask with gold trim, and the ape mask.

The items, valued at $28,000, are costumes from Cirque Du Soleil’s Totem production, which is playing in Vancouver until July 6.

Investigators are jumping through hoops to find the items because Fincham says the show must go on. Anyone with information is asked to contact Vancouver Police or Crime Stoppers.
