Sherwood Park-based Man-Shield Construction will build the 57,000-square-foot recreational facility that will include a field house, fitness centre, walking/jogging track, indoor playground, change rooms, concession and other multi-use, meeting and administration space.

Town council approved a total construction budget of $5,976,510 for the facility, which includes a unique indoor walking trail that will link with the nearby TransCanada Trail.

Outside, a 25,000-square-foot aquatic area is planned with junior Olympic pool, water slides, hot tub, teaching and tot pools and a splash pad.

A playground, amphitheatre, heritage area, trails and an outdoor fitness area are also planned.

Construction is expected to begin this summer with a spring 2014 opening date for the field house.

The facility is expected to provide a place for recreation as well as offer a venue for other kids of events, such as performances and trade shows.
