Blackfalds fieldhouse receives $750K donation

Lacombe County council has approved a $750,000 donation for a proposed $15-million Blackfalds fieldhouse.

Lacombe County council has approved a $750,000 donation for a proposed $15-million Blackfalds fieldhouse.

There could be more cash to come but council first wants to complete a major recreation plan it has just started before approving further funding.

Blackfalds is planning to begin construction on the fieldhouse this summer. It will be home to various recreational activities such as indoor play spaces for a variety of sports, walking and running tracks, pools, fitness equipment and lease spaces for local businesses.

The town asked in February for a $3-million donation towards the project, which will also be used by county residents.

On Thursday, council debated whether to approve 15 per cent of the cost of the facility to a maximum of $2.25 million over three years. However, after some discussion council opted to provide one-third of that and defer a decision on further funding until the recreation master plan is completed sometime in late spring or early summer next year.

Blackfalds hopes to have the fieldhouse open in 2014.
