EDMONTON — Homes were evacuated and streets were cordoned off in an Edmonton neighbourhood after a police stop led to the discovery of an explosive device in a car.

Two men were pulled over in the southeast neighbourhood late Tuesday afternoon.

Police say a search of their car led to the discovery of a suspicious package, which was later determined to be an explosive device.

The surrounding area was blocked off and the package was removed by the police bomb squad a few hours later.

Elrond Lee Smith and Heath Sliter, both Edmonton residents in their 30s, are facing charges.

Police allege the car they were in had been stolen in Swift Current, Sask.
