Bowden Institution remained in a lockdown mode on Thursday afternoon following the escape on Monday of an inmate who is considered armed and dangerous.

Shawn Thomas Evjen of Rocky Mountain House escaped from the medium security prison about 9:17 p.m. on Monday by scaling fences.

Evjen was serving a 24-and-a-half-year sentence for armed robbery, assaulting a peace officer, wearing a disguise while committing an offence and possession of a weapon.

He was sentenced in 1985 and released in February of this year.

He was returned to prison after committing another robbery in Red Deer.

RCMP consider him a high risk to re-offend.

New Bowden warden Dave Phelam said shortly after his swearing in on Thursday afternoon that he couldn’t comment because the investigation is ongoing.

The lockdown was implemented so police and Correction Services Canada authorities could re-evaluate all aspects of security.

Evjen is described as 1.7 metres tall (five feet seven inches) and weighs 75 kg (166 pounds). He has red hair and blue eyes.

Police warn the public not to approach Evjen.

Anyone with information or who has seen the suspect is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
