A Bowden Institution inmate charged in the stabbing death of another inmate made a brief court appearance on Wednesday.

Keith Clinton Sandmaier, 34, appeared by closed-circuit TV from the Red Deer Remand Centre. His case returns to court on March 14 to set a preliminary hearing date.

Sandmaier has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of David Tung Louie, 33, on June 19, 2011.

RCMP were called to the prison about 11 a.m. after a badly injured inmate was discovered. Louie was taken to Innisfail Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Crown prosecutor Jason Snider said he has been interviewing witnesses to determine who will not be needed for the preliminary hearing to cut down on the length of time it will take.
