Braves lose out in tournament semis

The Red Deer Carstar Braves mustered only two hits and were bounced 12-1 by the Sherwood Park Dukes in the semifinals of the Sherwood Park Doc Plosky midget AAA baseball tournament during the weekend.

Jonah Penner cracked a home run for the Braves, while starting pitcher Reign Letkeman allowed six earned runs on six hits while fanning three innings in a losing cause.

The Braves opened the tournament with an 8-7 loss to the Sherwood Park Athletics as Letkeman was three-for-five at the plate, Mitch Vanson was two-for-four with one RBI and Penner stroked a two-run triple. Losing pitcher Mac Guckert allowed seven earned runs on three hits through three and one-third innings and reliever Brett Barrett worked three and two-thirds scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit in the process.

The Red Deer squad then rolled over the Calgary Babe Ruth Selects 14-1, getting a three-for-five effort from Penner, who had a double and drove in two runs. Meanwhile, Letkeman was two-for-three with a double and one RBI, Nathan Damiani cracked a homer, double and two in two runs, and Levi Moon and Dylan Borman each contributed two runs and two RBI.

Vanson went the distance on the Braves mound, fanning eight batters and allowing just five hits.

• The Red Deer Dick’s Auto Braves were a perfect 5-0 in the mosquito A division of the Doc Plotzky tournament, downing St. Albert 13-5 in the final.

• The Red Deer Boston Pizza bantam AA Braves were 0-3 during the weekend, falling 13-6, 16-8 and 5-1 to the Calgary Redbirds, Strathmore and Jasper Place.
