Bylaw changes include for noise, clearing trash

The Town of Sylvan Lake has tweaked its community standards bylaw to better deal with music events.

The Town of Sylvan Lake has tweaked its community standards bylaw to better deal with music events.

Mayor Susan Samson said the bylaw has been changed to provide a permit process for events, such as a popular annual jazz festival.

Amendments to the Community Standards Bylaw also provide clarity on what is considered noise.

“Music, for some people, can be noise, and for others can be entertainment,” said Samson.

Among other changes made, was a section that makes it clear homeowners are expected to mow, weed and clear any garbage off the boulevards in front of or next to their homes. Those who break the rules face a $200 penalty on first offence, rising to $600 on third offence.

Previously, it had not been clear whose responsibility it was to maintain those areas.

The bylaw also prohibits snowplowing in business parking lots next to residential areas from midnight to 6 a.m.

Also added was a section prohibiting people from having outdoor lights that shine directly into an adjacent neighbour’s home.
