Calgary boy dies in fall from balcony

A nine-year-old boy died Tuesday after plunging 28 floors from a high-rise apartment in what appears to be an accidental fall.

CALGARY — A nine-year-old boy died Tuesday after plunging 28 floors from a high-rise apartment in what appears to be an accidental fall.

When emergency crews arrived, they found the boy dead in the back alley of the building.

Investigators say it appears the boy fell from a balcony where he had been reading, but they don’t yet know what happened to lead to the fall.

Police have ruled out foul play.

“I ran over, and what I saw, there was no possible hope for the boy,” one witness told CTV Calgary. “I just turned around, backed away, and waited for the police to show up.”

The boy’s mother was at the scene when police arrived. His father arrived later.

Police said witnesses are being interviewed and grief counsellors were called in.
